He is Maturing Quickly
The parents are very busy feeding bugs and berries, and fending off intruders (such as the other red-headed woodpecker). Note how the area around the nest cavity is very worn (different color, fresh marks). Even if you had not seen the woodpeckers you would know this is or was a recent active cavity.
