Fledgling

29 August - I arrived at the nest at 8:46am. I did not hear calls from the cavity, nor did I see the nestling at the opening. I waited, then finally I saw a parent go to the nest. It came to the cavity twice over a period of about 25 minutes. After it left each time I still did not see the nestling. I wondered if something had happened to it. I heard the chip call every so often. This is a call the young make calling for food, but the parents also use this call so I still was not sure. Then I saw something at the opening - a European Starling. Now I knew it had fledged.

Observation - 1hr, 5min
Overcast 82F NE winds 10mph

I watched and waited for a while longer, looking and listening for activity in the area around the nest. I then located it on a branch not far from the nest tree. The calls I heard were from the parent. It got fed about four times during my observation. I saw him fly to a different branch as you can see from the pictures.

Glad to know it fledged successfully.
