Day One

I flew into Detroit; from Maryland it was just slightly over an hour flight. After picking up the rental car I headed to Oregon, Ohio for an early check-in and drop off my luggage at the hotel. I then headed for Maumee Bay Lodge & Conference Center in Maumee Bay State Park for the festival check-in. This was an excellent place to bird last year, at their boardwalk. This is where I watched and photographed the family of screech owls. I figured I’d start birding there. As I entered the boardwalk I noticed right away the place looked devastated, many of the trees that were there last year were gone; including the screech owl tree. I learned that the water level had been rising and had killed most of the trees in that area. Very sad. I decided to go to the Magee Boardwalk instead.

It was overcast, 61F NE winds 9mph.

Northern Parula

Yellow-rumped Warbler

The birds that were in most abundance were the Yellow-rumped Warblers and Yellow Warblers. I noticed the quantity seemed less overall than last year. I suspected it might be due to the cool spring causing a slight delay in the migration.
