Flight Paths by Rebecca Heisman
Flight Paths is a thought provoking exploration of birds' migratory journeys and their profound impact on the world. Although not for everyone, I found it very informative. Price walks you through the history of bird migration research and the techniques used to delve into this fascinating event. I have read a number of articles on this subject - this book ties it all together in one publication.
Bird banding has long been a technique used to identify a particular bird for study. It is thought the first to band a bird was John James Audubon, when in 1804 he tied silver threads to the legs of Eastern Phoebe’s. Many years later, in 1909 the American Bird Banding Association was formed and in 1920 the federal government began oversight of bird banding, establishing the North American Birding Banding Program.
Once a bird is banded it must to be relocated either by tracking or found (recaptured or reported). Price takes you through the development of varies tracking equipment and how it has evolved over the years.
Price covers in great detail other techniques used to study migration, such as listening (sometimes with specialized equipment) to the flight calls as the birds migrate through the night. She also covers the discovery of using weather radar to track large flocks of migrating birds.
And what is done with all this data collected, why is bird migration so important - Price raises important concerns about habitat loss, climate change, and the necessity for international cooperation to protect the birds' delicate ecosystems. These discussions serve as a wake-up call for readers to appreciate the need for collective action in preserving the wonders of avian migration, thereby preserving bird populations.
