Day Five

I decided to take a slight break from birding today - I did go out to bird, but not from dawn to dusk. I went to the beach to enjoy another beautiful sunrise.

I went to the Hawkwatch and around Bunker Pond to bird for about 3 hours.

A Stilt Sandpiper was spotted from the Hawkwatch. I went around to the side of Bunker Pond to get a better look. As a group of us were watching the sandpiper and admiring the ducks preening we heard a commotion at the Hawkwatch…… more on that in a moment.

Stilt Sandpiper

The Stilt Sandpiper was hanging out with a Lesser Yellowlegs. I tried to get some comparison shots.

Those who know me know I can spend hours observing bird behavior. That’s the case here - watching the ducks preen. As they take care of their very important feathers - I consider it Bird Art.

….so, as I was watching the Stilt Sandpiper and watching the ducks….that commotion at the Hawkwatch - they saw a Mississippi Kite! I missed it by about 20 minutes. Don’t you just hate that!
