Day Four

I’m birding solo today, the rest of the group is in the process of leaving. I started my day at 7:15am birding at The Meadows. They have a brand new 1/2 mile metal boardwalk that extends off the main path.

After spending 2 1/2 hours at the Meadows I headed over to Cape May Point for a quick check at the Hawkwatch and then down the path to Bunker Pond. The Eurasian was there with the other ducks. This species use to be considered rare here, but they have been wintering here over the past few years, so it no longer shows up as rare.

I spent the next 2 1/2 hours walking the area and watching the waterfowl preening.

I also got a life bird for the trip - American Bittern

It was seen from the Hawkwatch platform. Not the best picture, but sometimes you have to get what you can get.

Next I headed over to the Cape May Bird Observatory Northwood Center. The highlight was seeing a Gray-cheeked Thrush in the wooded area behind the Visitor’s Center. After birding there for a couple of hours I headed back to the hotel.
