Day Five
Today’s birding takes place on the grounds of Hotel Villablanca, in the Los Angeles Cloudforest. This site is at an elevation of 3,000 feet. An opportunity to see birds in a different habitat. This site is about a 1.5 hour drive from Atenas. The road getting there was a little rough at times (thank goodness we had an excellent driver). It took close to 45 minutes to go the last 5 miles.
On the road approaching the grounds we saw a southern lapwing in a field with the cows. I saw the northern lapwing in Maryland, which was a rare bird for MD. When we first arrived the clouds were low and thick, that is why some of my pictures look overexposed. We had a birding guide who first took us around the hotel before taking us into the thick forest. Note: The crowned woodnymph (hummingbird) has a bird code of VCWO (violet-crowned woodnymph), there is no code for crowned woodnymph.
Other new birds I saw or heard:
Squirrel Cuckoo
Green Hermit
Rufous-tailed Hummingbird
Plain Antvireo
Red-faced Pintail
Tufted Flycatcher
Gray-breasted Wood Wren
Black-faced Solitaire
Slately-backed Nightingale-Thrush
Mountain Thrush
Rufous-collared Sparrow
Montezuma Oropendola
Golden-crowned Warbler
Golden-hooded Tanager
Buff-throated Saltator
It was late in the afternoon when we left the cloud forest, a beautiful drive.
