Day Seven
Today we went to a nearby coffee farm for a tour and of course a little birding. We went to the family run farm of El Toledo. An excellent tour, very informative. The farm has been in business for 80 years. They have 10 acres and produce about 4,000 lbs. of coffee per year. They stopped using chemicals 30 years ago. They work with the environment, encouraging other plants and birds to flourish on the property. They come up with creative ways to reduce waste. Typically a farm uses 1,000 gallons of water to produce 1 cup of coffee, at El Toledo they have reduced that to 1 liter per cup. They do this by reusing the residue to make other products, such as wine. I was very impressed with their enthusiasm and desire to be environmentally conscious. I plan to order my coffee from there. I had to get a little birding in…
On the way back to the house I saw one of my target birds - A taucan! Two of them flew into a wooded area right outside of town. Have to say - that made my day!!
