What to Look for -

  • Pattern on underside of tail which they often fan showing off the black & yellow (female)/orange (male) pattern

Female -

  • Yellow at base of secondaries (may not be noticeable) - Diagnostic

  • Yellow & black pattern underside of tail

  • Yellow sides

Male -

  • Black & orange year round (except 1st yr)

  • Orange & black pattern underside of tail

  • 1st yr looks similar to female, but may have dark spots on head/breast

  • Dark lores

Diagnostic Behavior - May fan tail showing off yellow/orange pattern.
