Northern Flicker 2024

30 July 2024

During a walk through my neighborhood I heard the call of a Northern Flicker. I looked up into the tree above and did not see the bird. I then studied the tree itself and noticed a small cavity. I thought I saw movement, but did not have my binoculars with me. I went home to grab my camera. When I returned I did in fact see a flicker nestling calling from the cavity. I watched and waited, within about 20 minutes a parent came by to feed. Then I noticed there were two nestlings.

I returned a few hours later hoping the lighting may be better.

I returned the next morning to find they had fledged (the shortest time I have monitored a nest).
