22 June 2023 - (approximately 21 days old) -The last couple of days have been rainy, cool (high 63/low 56) and very windy (gusts 30+mph). My visit today (overcast, 68F ENE winds 12mph) was the first in 11 days. The weather concerned me, both for the exposure of the chicks and the stability of the nest. As you can see in the picture, the sticks continue to fall out of the nest. As I approached the blind I saw one chick standing up in the nest, as I entered the blind it tucked down (to hide itself). I observed for about an hour. At times this chick did move around slightly - to stretch, preen and call with its mother for food. I never saw the second chick.

What happened to it? There is a slight chance it was tucked down the whole time. It could have fallen out of the nest and taken by a predator, or it could have been taken off the nest by a predator. I happen to know of a Great Horned Owl family in the area.

Confirmed - There is now only 1 chick.
