Description:
Large buteo.
Stocky body.
Long rounded wings.
Dark mark on patagium (leading edge of wing).
Broad short tail (red in adults); banded tail in immatures.
Both adults and immatures have a light chest and dark-streaked belly creating a “belly band” effect. The “belly band” is extremely variable in individuals.
Steady and heavy wingbeats. Sometimes shallow dihedral when soaring, otherwise flat.
Often seen on roadside poles and lines.
