Description:

Large buteo.

  • Longer tail than other buteos.

  • Translucent crescent before the “hands” visible from below and above.

  • Long, somewhat broad wings, slightly squared off at the tips.

  • When flying the wings are held flat when soaring and droop when gliding. The wing beat is similar to accipiters, quick and snappy.

  • Often seen perched for long periods when looking for prey.
